Camel cigarettes
In 1913, Reynolds introduced the Camel which in just four years captured 35% of the market. Its popularity was attributed to a new blend of tobaccos, a packaging innovation (Camels were the first cigarette aside from a few expensive blends sold in a soft package of twenty rather than a cardboard slide and shell box) and a shift in advertising from coupons and prizes to print media. Liggett & Myers and American Tobacco followed suit with Chesterfield and Lucky Strike in 1913 and 1916 respectively and together these three brands by 1925 amassed over 82% of the market at the expense of the many brands inherited from the Trust.
