KENT was introduced by Lorillard in 1952, with a unique, white, micronite filter and an overt "health" positioning. The brand poked along at about three billion units/year until 1956, when two Reader's Digest articles validated KENT as the "healthiest" brand on the market. At that point the brand took off, reaching 36 billion units/year by 1958. KENT was able to maintain its image as the smoker concern brand until 1966, when TRUE was introduced. As lowered delivery brands proliferated in the following years, KENT failed to maintain its dominant position in the smoker concern segment. Sales peaked at 38.4 billion in 1961, with almost a 9% SOM. KENT Parent volume has declined steadily ever since, but KENT family volume has been stabilized at approximately 30 billion units/year, through frequent line extensions (including Golden Lights and KENT III).
