The taste of cigarette is the most important factor which influences brand switching. Only a few respondents mentioned concerns about health.
The main reasons for shifting to Mild Seven are mild taste or as described as in between "full flavor" and "light", acceptability/ suitability for everybody, and popularity among peers. Another reason is good feeling in the mouth which is not dry.
Those who switched to Long Life Milds did so principally because it has a smooth taste (i.e. taste is neither strong nor light), is less expensive than imported brands, and is easily available. Others said that they used to smoke Long Life brand while they were in the army.
Some of Marlboro Lights smokers smoked Marlboro Red in the past, and the reason for switching to Marlboro Lights is that they are used to the taste of Marlboro Red and the taste of Marlboro Lights is not as strong. Also, Marlboro Lights is not too strong thus less harmful. Thus, another main reason is health concerns and the desire for a lower level of nicotine. Some said that the brand does not leave an unpleasant smell in the breath. Other were persuaded through the recommendation of friends.
